Simple Solutions to Complex Problems – The INS Mail “Processing” Technique

God-DAMN! Now this is some cold shit!

Just picked up this story about the INS “data processing center” in Laguna Nigel, California. Apparently, in order to deal with a huge backlog of incoming mail, the 24 year old manager, Dawn Randall, decided to simply shred excess documents. Voila, no more backlog!

Quoted from the New York Times article:

”According to the federal indictment, Ms. Randall ordered her subordinates last January to count the number of unprocessed papers in the filing center. They reported that about 90,000 documents were waiting to be handled. In February, the government says, she ordered at least five night-shift workers to begin shredding many boxes of papers.

By the end of March, the backlog had been cut to zero, and Ms. Randall ordered her subordinates to continue destroying incoming paper to keep current, the government says.”

Hmm, I think I now understand why it’s taking so long for my wife to get her green card.

For those of you who’ve never had the distinct “pleasure” that is the experience of dealing with INS, let me assure you that this story comes as absolutely no suprise at all. This is the worst bureaucracy I’ve ever had the misfortune to interface with, in any country. Their xenophobic hatred of foreigners is unparalleled; I’ve literally never seen a more wretched hive of scum and bigotry.

I hope that little Ms. Randall gets bar-b-qued in royal fashion for this; she deserves to be drawn and quartered in the most medieval fashion available. And, for chrissakes, what is it gonna take before we have some reform in this frigging organization???
